PythonAnywhere launched in May 2011 by Resolver Systems, who had previously produced a Python-based spreadsheet for the financial companies and had shown excellent market timing by releasing it just as the finance markets melted down in 2008.

During PythonAnywhere's early history, many people on the forums were talking about how amazing the website is, and some people said it could become an addiction. In October 2012, the company was acquired by PythonAnywhere LLP, and the Resolver Systems spreadsheet thingy went away (as did its online version, Dirigible, though an [Open-Source version of that](https://github.com/pythonanywhere/dirigible-spreadsheet) is still available.
